Instead of trying to impose a rigid explanation, I communicate extensively with my student. This allows me to understand steps by steps her/his thought process, as well as the gaps that I can help to overcome. Unless demanded, I tried to use real life situations in order to make the theory more concrete. Finally, I decided a while ago to accept the mission of making my student enjoy, at least a little bit more, mathematics.
I have been a french tutor for more than 5 years in Geneva, to 10+ students, aged from 12 to 25. I have helped them to obtain not only a passing grade, but also top level grades in their mathematic classes. I have allowed my students to take confidence in this subject and to learn to enjoy its practice.
